Canada Graduate Scholarships-Master’s (CGS M) Program

Educational Level: Master (in some cases, Doctorate), Country: Canada

The objective of the Canada Graduate Scholarships-Master’s (CGS M) Program is to help develop research skills and assist in the training of highly qualified personnel by supporting students who demonstrate a high standard of achievement in undergraduate and early graduate studies. The CGS M Program provides financial support to high-calibre scholars who are engaged in eligible master’s or, in some cases, doctoral programs in Canada.

The CGS M program supports up to 3,000 students annually in all disciplines and is administered jointly by Canada’s three granting agencies: the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

NEW!  Indigenous Scholars Awards and Supplements Pilot Initiative (NSERC and SSHRC): The Indigenous Scholars Awards and Supplements Pilot Initiative consist of a one-year, non-renewable supplement valued at $5,000 for all meritorious Indigenous CGS M applicants and a one-year, non-renewable award valued at $17,500 for all alternate candidates, subject to the limit of available funding. If you self-identify as Indigenous you are eligible to apply for this initiative.  Note: CIHR is not participating in this initiative.  For more information, see the pilot initiative webpage.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible to apply, applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada or a Protected Person under subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada) as of the application deadline date. International students are not eligible for the CGS M and should refer to Affiliated Fellowships Master’s Program, which runs in parallel to the CGS M competition at UBC.

Complete eligibility criteria are available on the Canada Graduate Scholarships-Master’s (CGS M) Program website. For research subject matter guidelines, please refer to Selecting the Appropriate Federal Granting Agency.

If applicants are unsure which granting agency they should select, they should consult their research supervisor and/or Graduate Advisor. In cases where clarification is still needed, applicants should send a half-page summary of their intended research proposal to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies for an assessment. The summary should be submitted via email to graduate.awards@ubc.ca with a request for confirmation if the research falls under the chosen agency’s mandate.

In addition to the eligibility requirements noted above, interested applicants should check with their future UBC department to find out if their future UBC department has any additional requirements to consider their CGSM application (such as having also submitted a UBC admission application by the CGSM application deadline).
