PhD Opportunity in Soil Carbon and Fertiliser Emissions Research

This is an opportunity for those interested in soil science, agricultural sustainability, and greenhouse gas accounting to apply for a fully funded four-year PhD under the call titled “Tracing Carbon: Refining CO₂ Emission Factors from Urea and Protected Urea in Irish Soils” (Walsh Scholars Reference Number: 2026028). The project focuses on improving the accuracy of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emission estimates associated with urea and protected urea fertilisers in Irish soils, particularly as protected urea is projected to account for most straight nitrogen fertiliser use in Ireland by 2030. Current national estimates rely on default international emission factors that may overestimate emissions under temperate soil conditions. The research will combine international data synthesis with targeted experimental studies on representative Irish soils to refine CO₂ emission factors and strengthen understanding of soil carbon cycling. The PhD will be conducted between Teagasc (Johnstown Castle, Co. Wexford) and University College Dublin, within a structured doctoral training programme that includes advanced laboratory access and international research experience.

Applications must be submitted through the Teagasc Walsh Scholarships online application form by 5:00 pm, Wednesday, 18 March 2026, with interviews scheduled for early to mid-April 2026 and a proposed start date of September 2026. The application requires selection of the specific project and intended start date, full personal and academic details, official transcripts, a CV, and a statement of motivation and research fit (maximum two pages), along with proof of English language proficiency where applicable and contact details for two referees (contacted only if an offer is made). Applicants may also indicate visa requirements, driving licence status (where relevant for certain projects), and any interview support needs. Full project and application details are available in the official call document and the application form.
